    Hi Kathleen/Katya,

    Few things:

    1. Have created a site and created my first post, for some reason I am not able to see it in the listing on the Sites?
    2. Is getting back to this site from the student site is not available ? A bit of confusing there are 2 Dashboard pointing to the same site for me? Unless I did something wrong.

Any clarification is appreciated. Below is the site I have created and the post is published.

      Hi,

I have gone into your site and set your ‘Sample page’ as your home page, this makes your site visible to the rest of the class. You can modify this page to however you want it to look, or of you want to change you home page you need to go into Settings > Reader.

      Thanks,

    Hi Kathleen/Katya

I just have one question about this week submission

So from what I understand we need to submit one blog about the Gartner report
and the blog that I need to submit is just my view about the report?
or there are more requirements which need to be in my first blog?
I’m so sorry but I’m a bit confused

    • kathleen Reply

      Hi Abdullah,

You are on the right track. It is just one blog post and it should include a bit about you (an introduction for your fellow students) and then your opinion on the Gartner report. You don’t need to write a lot about the Gartner report, or even everything in it, just a comment about what you found interesting. It might help to look at some of the blog posts other students have done to get an idea of what to do.

      Thanks,

      Kathleen

    Hi Kathleen/Katya,
Just wondering if I am missing something here. I wanted to ask a question of other people in the class – I have posted it as a blog post, is that the best way? Or is there another way to communicate with each other in this subject? Google+ is really good for other subjects but I don’t think there’s a google+ for this one?
    Thanks,
    Sharee

    • kathleen Reply

      Hi Sharee,

The best way to do it would be to go to the Activity wall and post a question there. The Activity wall is designed to be a chat area for students, as well as giving you updates on what is happening around the site.

      Thanks,

      Kathleen

    Hi Janine,

Sorry just want to clarify the question before I respond, Do you mean the comments on the unit site, or emails coming to your student address?

    Thanks,

    Kathleen

    • Janine Cummings Reply

      Hi Kathleen,

When I get a new comment (or response) I get an email (to my student email) to let me know a comment’s been made, but QUT has been putting them in quarantine so I have to ‘release to inbox’ and ‘report as not junk’ for each comment (or person) and they’re usually a @connect user. Just not sure if there is a simple fix to put a domain to be accepted – if you’re not sure I can contact helpdesk.

      Thanks
      Janine

      • kathleen Reply

        Hi Janine,

Let me check on that for you. IT Helpdesk won’t be able to help you as we are operating outside QUT borders! We have a strong spam filter on site as otherwise students tend to get inundated with spam during the semester, the spam bots of the web find that these sites are an active community and the comments go crazy. I will see if there is a fix I can install in the back end and let you know.

        Thanks,

        Kathleen

    Hi Kat / Katya,

Need a some help with the persona design. Being a IT person designing is not my strongest attribute. I have a persona character just trying to get some insights how best to do this with the powerpoint slide you provided? Given we dont class this week any chance I can catch-up on Thursday at 5 maybe?

    • Kumarathevan(Steve) Reply

      Hi Kate/Katya,

Could you also please point where to find the link to the sample persona that you showed during the classroom session please? Wasn’t able to find it under the Learning materials sections.

      • kathleen Reply

        Hi Steve,

I have just added the sample personas to the Assignment 1 page on the site, if you scroll down the page to Resources you are able to see that I have added the slides from the Week 3 class which include the example personas.

In regards to the design of your poster, have a look at these, and also search for some persona posters on the web to get an idea of how you would like to lay your poster out. We aren’t able to offer assistance in helping design your layout, as we would have to offer this to every student to make sure it was equitable.

However if you do have specific questions after you have looked at the examples please let me know.

        Thanks,

        Kathleen

  • Kelly Young Reply

Hi Kathleen. I thought I’d try to use powerpoint for this Persona Poster. Having never used it before I am finding it really challenging! Too many new concepts to master at the moment 🙁
My question is if I formulate the poster as a word document will I be able to convert it to the correct format for the Cube presentation?
Also will there be a chance to ask questions about the poster content during next Thursday night class? This project seems too easy in a content way, but every time I type up what has to go into it I overdo the words!
From the examples you have shown I am nervous as the layout and graphic design seems to make a big difference and I know that I can’t use graphic design programmes.
    Hope you can help.
    Cheers,
    Kelly

    • kathleen Reply

      Hi Kelly,
I don’t think you will be able to convert a word document into something that will display properly in the Cube. I will email the team at the Cube and see what they say, but I hunch is they will say you are best to stick with either the PowerPoint template or use the programs they recommend and there are some listed on the Assignment 1 page. Have you tried looking at Lynda.com on the Library website to get some tips about PowerPoint?

There will be time to ask questions about the content on Thursday. The examples that I have shown shouldn’t make you worry about things being ‘beautiful’. In the criteria sheet you can see that you can still get a 7 for presentation, as long as it is clear and easy to read.

I will let you know what they Cube team say, however they are usually very specific about the requirements as otherwise the posters can’t be displayed.

      Thanks,

      Kathleen

      Hi Kelly,
I’m not an expert but I have been using the powerpoint poster template and I would be happy to talk you through the basics. It might help to get you started?
      Let me know, Kaley

  • Kumarathevan(Steve) Reply

    Hi Kate/ Katya,

For the powerpoint template, would you be bale to give an idea what is the size of the fonts should be, to be appropriate when its displayed in the Cube please? Apologies if this has been posted somewhere and I have overlooked it.

    Cheers,
    Steve

    • kathleen Reply

      Hi Steve,

I am not sure about font sizes etc. My advice would be to follow the font sizes used in the template – so 41 for text and 79 for headings. You don’t have to stick to these though.

      Thanks,

      Kathleen

  • Kelly Young Reply

Hi Kathleen and Katya. I would appreciate your feedback if possible. Not a big thing. Just what I call myself in this LIS profession in the future. I have an existing persona as an artist Kelly Southee (my maiden name living on which is more unique sounding than Young). Have built my online presence around this name for art. I would like to keep this name but I’ve enrolled in my married name! Twitter I just set up in married name. LinkedIn is in maiden name.
Should I create a new online persona combining the two – Kelly Southee-Young? I’ve never liked hyphenated surnames though… but wonder if it might work. There are way too many Kelly Young’s out there otherwise.

    • kathleen Reply

This is a tricky one! I think that it depends on whether you want to keep your artist identity separate to your LIS identity. If you do, then I would stick to two separate names and not worry about the fact that there are lots of other Kelly Young’s. The LIS world is actually quite small, so once you are embedded in it I think that you will find it easier than you think to create your own Kelly Young LIS identity.

    Hi Katya / Kathleen

Wanted to clarify for the week 10 activity, the maker space activity , are we able to visit the makerspace online site and write about one of the invention ? or are we expected to built something? Most of it seem to involve cost of joining the group or DIY cost.

For this activity you really need to make something, as it is your Play activity. It might be a prototype on paper, but should still be something you make. Let me know if you need any further clarification.

HI Kathleen, For my week 10 Play activity I intended to do a Makerspace activity. BUT wanted to attend one in person, rather than online. SO I had to wait until last Friday when I went to The Edge Makerspace workshop run by Portland native Chris Lau. So I didn’t technically meet the week 10 deadline. Instead I did a play and reflect on gamification to meet the unit criteria. I assume I can’t use the Makerspace post which I only did yesterday? Can you please clarify. I don’t mind either way.

    Hi Kathleen,

For the assignment 3, the criteria mentioned the review has to have literature reference? For the technology that we are reviewing I find it challenging to get handle on these literature, any tips how do we go about? Does the literature has to review the usage as well?

We are correlating the need, usage, features and practicality but finding a literature that come close to this is challenging at the moment unless I missed something ?

    Any assistance is much appreciated.
