Background

The approach to teaching and learning in IFN612 is focused on self-directed learning and the concept of learning through play and experimentation. Your engagement with the learning activities is critical to your success in this unit. For this reason, the main assessment item for the unit is built around the completion of fortnightly learning activities.

You will create a blog or vlog to document your learning journey. If you are new to blogging then have a look at the information on writing blogs and correct referencing and attribution on your blog.

Each fortnight learning resources and learning activities will be posted to the unit site by 9am Monday. These will include weekly learning activities that are broken up into two components: Play and Reflect.

Over the course of the semester you will complete a total of:

  • six Play activities
  • six Reflect activities

In addition to completing these activities you will also engage with your peers. The assignment is marked out of 100 and weighed at 60% of your mark for the unit.

At a minimum (to receive a pass mark) you are expected to start or continue discussions that contribute to the learning community in a meaningful way at least twice per fortnight.

The fine print

How do the Play activities work?

Each Play activity is designed to allow you to experiment with a technology or tool. This activity may incorporate multiple steps. You will provide evidence of completion of these activities via your blog – instructions on how to provide evidence will be supplied with each activity.

How do the Reflect activities work?

Each Reflect activity will ask you to critically reflect on a particular topic. These reflective components will be posted to your blog or vlog, in a medium of your choice (video, audio, screencast, slidecast, written blog post).

How will the activities be marked?

  • Two of your Play activities will be marked, each out of 15. You will choose which Play activities are marked.
  • Two of your Reflect activities will be marked, each out of 15. You will choose which Reflect activities are marked.

You cannot elect to have your Play activity from Week 1 marked.

You will select one Play and one Reflect activity for marking in

  • Week 8, 11.59pm Sunday 1 May
  • Week 13, 11.59pm Sunday 5 June

Do I have to complete all the Play and Reflect activities?

Yes.

When do I have to complete the Play and Reflect activities?

You must complete the activities a fortnight after it is released, no later than midnight on Sunday.

Are there penalties if I don’t complete all of my assigned activities?

For each activity you do not complete, a deduction of ten marks from your total mark for Assignment 2 will occur. For example if you complete only three of the six activities you will incur a 30 mark deduction. Assuming your overall mark for the three components is 70/100, your mark would drop to 40/100 once the penalty is applied.
